Should non-members be able to see/download attachments?

Since attachments are about to be enabled globally...

I don't want this forum to become a file hosting/sharing site for non-members who just lurk... but requiring registration just means we'll get like 10+ users to register and never post (since they just want to download something) for every user that posts.

Thoughts?

It's the driveby traffic vs the need to interact. I'd say members because I used to frequently Google for deals and I keep coming across something like redflagdeals which is no membership needed however I signed up eventually because I wanted to ask questions and imagined I'd be a regular poster but I don't frequent it nor interact with it maybe once or twice a year since I signed up

Members. If someone doesn't have the time or the inclination to register as a member they have no right to a free feed!

Yeah, I'm thinking members only.

Right now the permissions are set so only registered users can see attachments.

And attachments are fully enabled.

Max ~5mb per post. A bit high for people just sharing the odd picture or script, but large enough that if someone wants to share an ebook or two they can.

I am leaning towards freely downloadable. That is what got me coming back to popular sites like FF. Always stayed away from trade2win and such.

Then I had questions to ask so needed to sign up. It’s the chicken before the egg thing. It bugs me to have to register just to download something, so I redo a Google search instead of signing up and go to another site.

The question is will your monthly bandwidth limit handle it in the long run. If not there are unlimited cheap packages out there.

Plus it looks funny without the visiable attachement...

Well said. I understand the marketing angle.
I just detest individuals who take, and give nothing.

Yes agree. But, those who take and don't give back generally have nothing to give and are searching... On the other hand, once one takes and takes (as i did) Till i found my way and learned enough to try to help , it gave me an incentive to give back a bit. Which i did in little ways here and there.

And I am assuming Jack at some point will in some way shape or form wanna monetize traffic (Unbiased and not selling info) to cover a bit of costs out of his pocket. Which I think is a bit normal. So, he will need people to come back and back even if they don’t contribute via the forum they will be doing so in another way.

As the old saying goes here: Why make it simple when it can be made complicated.

Just my thoughts.

Then again we still need some good folks and content too.

Cheers!

Your traffic argument/discussion is concisely put.

I'm a trader... thinking hurts ;D

LOl, you're way above average in my book, trust me. :) These topics are so debatable anyways. But I just go by what I see happen and emerge… Easiest is usually best. Who wants headaches for simple tasks... Like trading, patterns are everywhere.

Trading day done. Miller time, lol. :p

Cheers!

Awesome discussion.

Both sides have points, and thanks ramy for pointing out an view I didn't think of before.

I'm caught on this now. I'm thinking I may experiment, if I can find a way to prevent hot-linking (the use of the attachment request URL in another site so people don't need to even visit us to get the attachment) then I'm going to try and open attachments up to guests as well...

*writes down in to-do list*

It's the driveby traffic versus the need to cooperate. I'd state individuals since I used to as often as possible Google for arrangements and I continue going over something like redflagdeals which is no enrollment required anyway I joined in the end since I needed to pose inquiries and envisioned I'd be a standard notice yet I don't visit it nor communicate with it perhaps more than once per year since I joined

It was settled that guests need to register before being able to download attachments and such a long while ago. Generally speaking, we get literally thousands of internet users per month looking to extract value without contributing so a signup asking for their email isn't a lot to ask.
